What is the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve? ESGR was established by the Department of Defense in 1972 to promote cooperation and understanding between Reserve component members and their employers and to assist in the resolution of conflicts arising from an employee's military commitment. ESGR operates through a network of more than 4,500 volunteers. The nation's Reserve components comprise half of our total The nation's Reserve components comprise half of our total available military manpower. The National Defense Strategy includes the National Guard and Reserve as full partners in the fully integrated Total Force. Mission Gain and maintain employer support for Guard and Reserve service by recognizing outstanding support, increasing awareness of the law, and resolving conflict through mediation.
